Appointed to Design Two Prominent Projects in London and Barbados
DUBLIN & LONDON--(Business Wire)--
Metic Group plc (AIM:METC), (`Metic` or `the Group`), the building systems and
products group, continues to demonstrate the group`s unique expertise in glazing
design and has been appointed to design two prominent projects in London and
Barbados. In London, Metic has been appointed by Queen Mary and Westfield
College University in London on a new Humanities building at the University.
Metic has also been appointed to provide a glazing solution for The Lanterns
Shopping Centre development in Barbados.

Queen Mary and Westfield College University, London
The 3,450 sq m (37,136 sq ft) new Humanities building was designed by architects
Wilkinson Eyre to provide state of the art facilities for students, staff and
visitors through the use of an environmentally responsive building. The unique
design has been driven by the creation of a 300 seat auditorium which has been
strategically isolated from the rest of the building for acoustic reasons.

Queen Mary and Westfield College University have appointed Metic`s specialist
architectural and engineering team to create the glazing elements of the scheme.
These include a large glazed window through which the auditorium will be visible
from the road and a first floor glazed box which will form part of a flexible
double height film and drama studio extending over the Mile End Road pavement.
Metic will also incorporate digitally printed glass to create vision and
obscuring panels and specialist acoustic glazing throughout the building,
including the new main entrance

The building will have 10 per cent on site renewable energy through the use of
ground source heat pumps. To further enhance the environmental efficency of the
building Metic will provide sustainable solutions where possible including; a
state of the art climate wall for some of the academic offices fronting the Mile
End Road. Work is expected to start on site in early June this year.

The Lanterns Shopping Centre, Barbados
Located in Christ Church, Barbados, the 4,571 sq m (49,200 sq ft) Lanterns
shopping centre is designed within an L-shaped configuration over two floors
flanked by an open air colonnade. The two arms of the L-shape converge on an
atrium with retail units on both levels. Metic Group has been appointed by
Windsor Plaza Ltd. To design the overhead skylight, a unique and pivotal feature
in the atrium section of the development.

Metic has incorporated special design elements into the project which will
complement the centre`s natural environment. There will be a significant use of
stainless steel to support the glass to counteract the corrosive effects of the
nearby ocean. Special features will also be incorporated into the design as the
area lies within an earthquake zone. For this reason, the primary building
structure has been designed to be able to withstand horizontal movements of +/-
90mm in any direction and therefore the glazing solution for the scheme has also
been designed with this unique requirement in mind.

Paul Williams, CEO Metic Group, commented, "These two projects are particularly
exciting for Metic as we continue to build a diversified, international revenue
stream. Both developments provide our team with the opportunity to demonstrate
our unique ability to design specialised glazing solutions that create maximum
visual impact, meet high performance requirements and environmental standards
and effectively integrate with and complement the natural environment."

He continued, "In the UK, Metic has an unrivalled reputation for creating
glazing projects that create a unique sense of place and we now look forward to
developing and establishing that reputation on an international platform. In
line with our ambitious business strategy to broaden our international presence,
we are expanding our portfolio of projects both in the Middle East and the
Caribbean on an ongoing basis. For example, the Group is currently in the
process of completing a new Corporate Head Office building for the Royal Bank of
Trinidad and Tobago which was our first commission from Windsor Plaza Ltd."
