LAKE MARY, FL, Mar 31 (MARKET WIRE) --
PediaVision today announced the number of Pediatricians who are using its
PediaVision Assessment Solution for children vision screening is growing
rapidly nationwide.
One such Pediatrician is Dr. Jeff Heaton of the ESD Pediatric Group as
well as Pediatric Ophthalmologist Dr. Miles Burke of Cincinnati, Ohio --
both of whom strongly endorse the PediaVision device.
Dr. Heaton commented, "The PediaVision device allows us to identify vision
problems and begin treatment early. We can catch vision issues that we
wouldn't have normally caught before PediaVision at a much earlier age,
which can drastically affect future outcome. My son is a prime example --
if our office had this device a few years ago, we could have diagnosed his
condition at least three years earlier leading to improved visual outcomes
today."
Dr. Burke added, "Parents rely on their Pediatricians to identify vision
issues early, and Pediatricians now have a highly accurate vision
screening tool that identifies vision problems early in life -- even
before children can speak. Pediatricians who are using the PediaVision
Assessment Solution are revolutionizing the way vision screening takes
place and are to be applauded for leading the way with this breakthrough
technology. I encourage Pediatricians to use this device and suggest
parents ask them to get it," he said.
"In addition, I encourage our state and national legislators to pass
legislation that would ensure all children are screened for vision
problems, with appropriate follow-up eye examinations when necessary,
prior to school entry. PediaVision's screening device will help
Pediatricians identify children who need to be examined by
Ophthalmologists," Dr. Burke said.
"Approximately 95 percent of vision issues in children -- if caught early
-- can be corrected, providing them a better quality of life. Insurance
companies, many of whom do not currently cover the cost of this kind of
vision screening, should take note that early intervention and treatment
would potentially save in overall healthcare costs," Dr. Heaton added.
The only binocular vision screening device that produces highly accurate,
immediate results, the PediaVision Assessment Solution (PAS) is effective
for screening children of any age, especially pre-verbal children. The
software produces written results and a recommendation as to whether or
not a subject should be referred to an eye care specialist. Conducted from
three feet away, the screening is as simple and non-invasive as taking a
picture of the child.
Launched publicly just last October, PediaVision is already being used in
16 states throughout the U.S. and growing rapidly. PediaVision's CEO David
Melnik commented, "The fact that Pediatricians in 16 states are already
using our technology validates the need for this kind of objective vision
screening," he said.
"Our PAS enhances the value and profitability of any pediatric practice
and is fast (takes less than 5 seconds), simple (one-button controlled
automatic measurements), non-invasive (assessments conducted from a
distance of three feet), convenient (easily incorporated as part of an
annual exam) and affordable (less than 20 screenings/month to break even).
This kind of vision screening is coming, and represents a significant
revenue stream to the Pediatric industry (potentially $1 billion),
Pediatricians who get our device now will begin reaping benefits
immediately and will help lead this revolutionary change in vision
screening," he added.
Vision Loss Prevention is Urgent
According to the Center for Disease Control
(http://www.cdc.gov/DIABETES/pubs/pdf/vision.pdf), blindness and vision
impairment in children and older adults is considered one of the top
causes of disability, and is often underrepresented or not represented at
all as an indicator for optimal health and quality of life. There is an
urgent need to address the full spectrum of challenges that persist in
encumbering efforts to increase the use of and availability of
evidence-based, cost-effective interventions to prevent vision loss.
The CDC document says that in the United States, the most prevalent
disabling childhood conditions are vision disorders including amblyopia,
strabismus, and significant refractive errors. Unless it is successfully
treated in early childhood, amblyopia usually persists into adulthood, and
is the most common cause of permanent one-eye vision impairment among
children.
Children with impaired vision may have greater difficulty learning, have
trouble participating in organized sports and recreational activities,
have limited employment options, may have increased morbidity or
mortality due to accidents, and have difficulty with psychosocial
development.
According to a recent article in The Orlando Sentinel
(http://www.pediavision.com/pdfs/PediaVision_Holdings_of_Lake_Mary.pdf),
the most recent vision data from the federal centers for Disease Control
and Prevention's National Health Interview Survey indicate that about 13.5
million children younger than 17 had vision problems in 2008 and that each
of those children will incur an average of more than $500,000 in costs
related to vision.
Parents are encouraged to ask their Pediatrician to screen for vision at
all of their child's well check-ups, and to get the latest vision
screening technology to help them get an accurate, objective screening.
