GM Hungary unit to cut work hours from April-MTI

BUDAPEST, April 7 | Tue Apr 7, 2009 5:09am EDT

BUDAPEST, April 7 (Reuters) - GM Powertrain, the Hungarian unit of U.S. car maker General Motors (GM.N), will introduce four-day work weeks in engine production from the middle of April, the news agency MTI reported on Tuesday.

It cited GM Powertrain spokeswoman Edit Legradi as saying the decision, tentatively agreed with unions in January, was aimed at saving jobs at one of Hungary's biggest industrial firms, amid the global crisis.

Legradi was not immediately available for comment.

MTI said the company has already shifted to four-day work weeks in other segments of production.

Earlier on Tuesday, data showed Hungary's industrial output plunged an annual by 28.9 percent in February, largely due to a fall in car making and other export-oriented industries. (Reporting by Gergely Szakacs; Editing by Hans Peters)
