Former Bausch & Lomb Exec Joins Houghton College as VP for Finance and Administration HOUGHTON, N.Y., April 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Efrain Rivera, a former corporate vice president and chief financial officer for Bausch and Lomb in Rochester, NY, has been named Vice President of Finance and Administration for Houghton College, effective May 1, 2009. "Efrain has distinguished himself in domestic and international business circles as a far-sighted, strategic financial thinker and planner," said Shirley A. Mullen, college president. "He is also a person of great wisdom and integrity. We look forward to him joining our team and contributing to the growth and development of his undergraduate alma mater." Rivera, who graduated from Houghton College in 1978, will be responsible for all aspects of Houghton's daily and long-range financial planning and operations including its investment portfolio and endowment funds. In addition, he will oversee the areas of human resources, facilities and technology as well as teach in Houghton's business program. "My experience confirms that college graduates need a solid academic foundation to succeed, but today's developments show that they must also be prepared to uphold the highest standards and values of our society," Rivera said. Rivera was born in Paterson, New Jersey. He received a B.S. degree in Psychology from Houghton College and went on to earn an MBA in Finance from The William E. Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester, and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from New York University. He also earned an Executive Doctorate in Management from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. In the mid-1980s, Rivera worked as a trial attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington. In 1989, he joined Bausch and Lomb and held director positions in Investor Relations and Business Analysis. In 1994, Rivera served as general manager of B&L Mexico and later in the 1990s as vice president of its Finance and Vision Care operations in Rochester. He continued his career as president of B&L Canada and Latin America. In 2002, he was elected an officer of the company and shortly thereafter, took a leave of absence to serve as Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Eastern University, near Philadelphia, PA. In 2004, he returned to B&L and was named corporate vice president and treasurer. He took an early retirement from the B&L in 2009. Rivera is a Certified Management Accountant(R) (CMA), Certified Financial Manager(R) (CFM), a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society for business. He and his wife Michele, a Houghton alumna who also graduated in 1978, are parents of two teenaged children. Houghton, founded by The Wesleyan Church in 1883, provides an academically challenging, Christ-centered education in the liberal arts and sciences to students from diverse traditions and economic backgrounds and equips them to lead and labor as scholar-servants in a changing world. The college of 1,200 students is located in western New York, just 65 miles from Rochester and Buffalo.
