NRB Inc. won five Awards of Distinction during the Modular Building
Institute's annual conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 31st.
Awards were given for the Millmont School project, Walpole Island project
and NRB's web site. Every year the Modular Building Institute hosts an
Awards program that recognizes the best projects in commercial modular
building design and construction. The projects are scored in four
categories: architectural excellence, technical innovation, cost
effectiveness/energy efficiency, and calendar days to complete.
"We are very pleased that two NRB projects took first place honors in
this awards competition," said Bob McNeil, President of NRB. "These
awards are a testament to our clients, our staff and the modular
construction process."
The Millmont School in Reading, Pennsylvania, won an unprecedented three
awards. It took first place in the category of Permanent Education
Building over 10,000 square feet; 'Best of Show' as chosen by convention
attendees as well as 'Judges Choice'; a new category this year, which is
awarded to the building project with the highest number of cumulative
points awarded by the judges.
Completed in just 12 months, Millmont is a two story school building set
over an underground parking garage, integrating 60,000 sq. ft. of
permanent modular construction for classrooms, offices and media centers,
with 38,000 sq. ft. of conventional site built construction that houses
the gym, cafeteria and mechanical spaces. The brick and concrete facade
resembles a 1950's school befitting the era of that neighborhood, and
includes the original gargoyles salvaged from the old school.
"We are very proud of Millmont and feel it was a great success," said
Richard Quinn of Gilbert Architects. "I admit I was skeptical about the
use of modular construction at first, but working on this project with
the NRB team has made me a believer," he added.
The 60,000 square foot building was built at NRB's Ephrata PA plant, and
transported to Reading PA in sections, using steel and concrete modular
construction technology. "This project delivery method has the modular
construction and site construction working together concurrently on and
off the site. That helps reduce on site disruption and shortens the
schedule, allowing the school to open sooner" said Don Engle, General
Manager of NRB's Ephrata Plant.
Walpole Island (Constable's Office & Detention Area), in Walpole, Ontario
won first place for permanent institutional construction under 5,000
square feet.
Completed in just over 4 months, the Walpole Island Police Building was
the result of a combined Federal and Provincial Government initiative to
fulfill a longstanding commitment to provide the people of Walpole Island
First Nation with a new, permanent police services building. At 4,940 sq.
ft., this was a turnkey project, where the building was transported to
site in prefabricated sections about 85% finished, so the time to
complete and site disruption were kept to a minimum. The building is
finished in architectural stone to blend in with the community.
According to Laurie Robert, NRB's VP of Sales and Marketing, off-site
modular construction is an inherently "greener" process. "Building
off-site under controlled conditions significantly reduces the amount of
waste generated at a project site. It also reduces vehicular traffic,
safety hazards and disruption to the neighboring community," she stated.
