UPDATE 1-Russian Lukoil, Transneft eye Mazeikiu-report
(Adds Lithuanian PM quotes)
WARSAW/VILNIUS, April 7 (Reuters) - Russian oil companies Lukoil (LKOH.MM) and Transneft TFNF_p.RTS approached Poland's No.1 refiner PKN Orlen PKNA.WA to buy shares in its Lithuanian arm Mazeikiu, Rzeczpospolita daily reported on Tuesday.
PKN's chief executive Jacek Krawiec was quoted as saying that no talks on the sale were taking place at the moment.
"It is known that Russians are interested in refining assets in the region. It is not my style to publicly comment on my business meetings," Krawiec told Rzeczpospolita.
Lithuania Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius told reporters he saw "no threats yet" that the country's refiner may be taken over by Russian companies.
"It is not the first time they are making such attempts, but I hope PKN Orlen has long-term strategic goals in this region, and we are ready to help," Kubilius said.
PKN Orlen outbid Russian oil groups and bought a controlling stake in Mazeikiu in 2006. It now owns 90 percent of the refiner and agreed to buy the remaining 10 percent from the Lithuanian government.
Once the transaction is finalised Lithuania will lose its right of first refusal, as it no longer will be a shareholder, Krawiec added.
"We would talk to the PKN so we can keep some safeguards in place," Kubilius said. (Reporting by Patryk Wasilewski and Nerijus Adomaitis in Vilnius; editing by James Jukwey)
