Commitment to 'green' activities at Baxa Corporation celebrates Earth Day
while providing reduced costs and workplace benefits.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Baxa Corporation announces the
launch of its 'ecological' program to encourage smart use of natural
resources. Joining the 'green generation,' Baxa has put in place actions to
celebrate Earth Day 2009 and create meaningful environmental change.
Historically, Baxa has chosen product designs and raw materials that reduce
waste and improve patient safety and minimize environmental impact. More
recently, the company has introduced specific initiatives for reducing its
environmental impact and advancing its environmental stewardship.
As part of its 'ecological' effort, Baxa discontinued the use of Styrofoam(TM)
and paper cups for its associates - issuing reusable hot and cold cups for use
during work hours. Extensive on-site recycling includes not only paper,
plastic and metal components, but computer and electronics and batteries.
Aside from providing community service, 'green' initiatives at the company
have resulted in significant environmental savings.
According to data provided by Waste Management, the company's waste and
recycling hauler, Baxa recycling efforts included 80.3 tons of recycled paper
and cardboard and resulted in the following benefits for 2008:
-- 281 cu yd of landfill airspace saved
-- 1,365 mature trees saved
-- 37,174 gallons of oil saved
-- 1,927 gallons of gasoline saved
-- 562,030 gallons of water saved
-- 329,189 kw-hr of electricity saved
"Baxa Corporation has a long history of environmental awareness - even before
'green' was popular in the media and among the general public," notes Steve
vanEngen, Senior VP of Operations. "Among our key initiatives for
environmental stewardship are the use of recycled materials wherever possible
in packaging and manufacturing. Further, the company supports lean
manufacturing principles to reduce waste and scrap in production, along with
encouraging electronic ordering to reduce reliance on paper processes.
Widespread corporate recycling makes the effort visible to all associates,
while promoting compliance. Finally, marketing and sales efforts increasingly
rely on electronic media - reducing paper and ink consumption for printing and
costs for packaging and distribution."
Baxa Corporation strives to address environmental impact in all of its
operations - whether they are manufacturing or office activities. The company
operates under full compliance with the WEEE (European Waste Electrical and
Electronics Equipment) Directive and promotes environmental stewardship in
both global and local venues.
