Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X Increases Safety and Efficiency

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Ft. Lauderdale - Hollywood
International Airport is now operating with Sensis Airport Surface Detection
Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X), a runway incursion detection and alerting system.
Fifteen of the 35 airports to receive the technology through the FAA's ASDE-X
program are now operational.

ASDE-X combines ground surveillance data from a number of sources to provide
air traffic controllers with highly accurate, real-time position and
identification information of all aircraft and vehicles on the airport
surface. By integrating surface movement radar, transponder multilateration
and Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B), ASDE-X provides
seamless, redundant coverage in all weather conditions. The system also
features advanced runway conflict detection and alerting technology called
Safety Logic, which uses complex algorithms to discern and alert controllers
of potential aircraft or vehicle incursions on the runway.

"ASDE-X provides controllers with a powerful tool that helps them more safely
manage and control traffic on the airport's surface," said Tony Lo Brutto,
vice president and general manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems. "The FAA
has determined that airport efficiency also increases through the use of
ASDE-X as controllers provide more effective taxi instructions to pilots,
translating into more on-time arrivals for passengers while saving fuel and
reducing emissions."
