Modern Healthcare's list features 18 newcomers with the power and influence to improve the healthcare system CHICAGO, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Key players in the movement to reform the nation's healthcare system dominate Modern Healthcare's list of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare for 2009. Among those making the list are Kathleen Sebelius, secretary-designate of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department; Nancy-Ann DeParle, director of the newly created White House Office of Health Reform; and Mary Wakefield, administrator of the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. "With so many women in positions of authority in healthcare, the chances of changing the system for the better are greater than ever," said David Burda, editor of Modern Healthcare. "Our Top 25 Women in Healthcare were not satisfied with the status quo of the healthcare executive career track. They surely won't be satisfied with the status quo of the healthcare system they increasingly run." The list is the publication's third biennial list of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare. The previous lists appeared in 2005 and 2007. The 2009 list features 18 newcomers, including Patricia Hemingway Hall, CEO of the Health Care Service Corp., one of the nation's largest health insurance companies; Mary Kay Henry, international executive vice president of the Service Employees International Union; and Susan Sheridan, co-founder and president of Consumers Advancing Patient Safety. Modern Healthcare readers nominated nearly 200 women to be considered for the 2009 recognition. This year's list appears in the April 20 issue of Modern Healthcare. The list also appears on the magazine's Web site, ModernHealthcare.com. Modern Healthcare will be conducting its fourth biennial Top 25 Women in Healthcare recognition program in 2011.
