TD Bank Teaches Children About Saving Money on National Teach Children To Save
Day, April 21, and Everyday
Bank offers fun savings tips for parents to share with children
CHERRY HILL, N.J., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- On April 21, National Teach
Children To Save Day, TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank(R), a pioneer in
practical financial education for kids, encourages parents and teachers to
talk openly to children about the importance of saving money. To help, TD
Bank has developed five interactive tips to get families talking and learning
about money.

1. Use a calculator and show them how much money they will have after one,
five or ten years if they save x dollars every week/month. Then post a
chart that shows the progress they're making over time.
2. Give them an incentive: "For every x dollars you save, I'll
add xx more dollars to your account." This may be hard during a
tough economy, but even a dime for every dollar will help them
understand
the reward.
3. If there is a particular item your child wants, have him/her cut a
picture of it from a magazine or print it from a website. Have the
children post it in a place where they will see it often as a reminder
of
the goal they are working towards. The purpose is to encourage them not
to spend on small items that are not as important.
4. Show kids the benefits of saving. Show them pictures of different items
they want at different dollar amounts. The more you save, the more you
get.
5. Have a family game night with games like Monopoly Junior, Payday and
Life. There are many online games that teach kids about money. Check
out
the game room section at www.tdbank.com/wowzone for crossword puzzles
and
word searches that focus on money. For teens, there is a fantasy stock
market game where each player starts with $50,000 of fantasy money that
allows them to buy and sell stock and ranks them against other players.
"Today, and everyday, parents can help their kids become financially literate
by sharing everyday experiences with them. Now is the time to talk to them
while economic issues are top of mind for most people. Also, kids need to know
that money and savings are not only important but managing them can be fun,"
said Fred Graziano, regional banking president, TD Bank. "TD Bank believes
that financial literacy is the key to ongoing success and that's why we offer
free programs to consumers year round through the TD Bank WOW!Zone."
National Teach Children To Save Day was started in 1997 by the Education
Foundation of the American Banking Association (ABA) to provide personal
financial education programs to schools and students. The program also
addresses the trend of the declining personal savings rate in the United
States. Since the day started, more than 60,000 bankers have reached some 2.8
million young people.
The TD Bank WOW!Zone is a free, interactive financial literacy program for
grades K-12 that features both an in-school and online component. TD Bank
works with local schools and youth organizations to provide valuable
information including an introduction to saving, understanding lines of credit
and the stock market. The TD Bank WOW!Zone reaches more than 14,000 students
each month. Trained TD Bank instructors volunteer an average of 5,000 hours of
classroom and in-store instruction to 4,900 classes and 100,000 students each
year. Students, parents and educators can access games, and learning
activities at TDBank.com.
