Aneesh Chopra Named as Chief Technology Officer WASHINGTON, April 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In his weekly radio address on Saturday, President Barack Obama announced his appointment of Aneesh Chopra, a former Managing Director at The Advisory Board Company, to serve as the nation's first Chief Technology Officer. Chopra, currently Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia, served as a senior executive and thought leader at the Advisory Board from 1997 to 2006. Chopra oversaw the firm's research on best practices for addressing key challenges confronting health care providers and payers. In this capacity he convened and counseled working groups of preeminent health system CIOs, CFOs, and health plan executives. In addition, he advised the Chairman on the firm's technology investment strategy and was instrumental in launching Compass, the firm's first foray into deploying business intelligence capabilities to drive performance improvement in health care. In making the announcement, President Obama called on Chopra to "help us revamp government operations from top to bottom and ensure that the federal government is truly working for the American people." President Obama says that Chopra's duties in his new role will involve using "technological innovation to help achieve our most urgent priorities." As such, it is anticipated that Chopra will contribute to health care reform efforts, given his background in health IT and finance; Chopra won the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's (HIMSS) 2007 State Leadership Advocacy Award for fostering health IT in Virginia. "Aneesh has long been a leading thinker about the critical intersection of health care and technology, and we are especially proud that he now has the opportunity to apply the best-practice principles and creative problem-solving approach he honed at the Advisory Board to the biggest challenges facing our nation," said Advisory Board CEO Robert Musslewhite.
