HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(Business Wire)--
Expanding on its broad set of embedded Ethernet connectivity solutions for
consumer, industrial and enterprise hardware applications, SMSC (NASDAQ: SMSC)
today introduced the industry`s smallest size and lowest power consumption
10/100 Ethernet Physical Layer Transceivers (PHYs). The LAN8710 and LAN8720
offer up to 40 percent lower power consumption than existing SMSC transceivers.
Primary applications include set-top boxes, digital video recorders, network
printers and servers, IP and video phones, digital televisions, gaming consoles
and POS terminals. In its 13 years of designing networking products, SMSC has
shipped more than 100 million Ethernet ports and is relied upon by a global
customer base as a single supplier of a variety of networking products designed
to work with a broad range of device architectures.

"Lower power, smaller footprint and fuller features are increasingly becoming
nonnegotiable requirements for Ethernet connectivity in embedded consumer and
industrial applications," said Mark Bode Vice President of Connectivity
Marketing at SMSC. "Today, SMSC is delivering on that requirement with its
latest compact Ethernet solutions offering a flexible power management
architecture."

The LAN8710 and LAN8720 PHYs have integrated voltage regulator and ESD
protection components. The MAC interface supports flexible I/O voltages from
3.6V to 1.6V. Higher performance ASICs, SoCs and FPGAs through migration to
lower geometry processes require lower I/O voltage support. The LAN8710/20
devices provide support for flexible I/O voltage to enable a highly optimized
system design. The LAN8710 and LAN8720 offer the flexibility of disabling
on-chip regulators to reduce system power consumption.

In addition to standard features such as IEEE 802.3/802.3u compliance, UNH
interoperability certification, HP Auto-MDIX support and MII/RMII interfaces,
the LAN8710 and LAN8720 PHYs deliver additional features:

* SMSC`s flexPWRTM technology for low power consumption & variable I/O voltage
support
* Excellent ESD Protection levels without any external protection devices
* Single 25MHz Crystal design
* Operation over extended commercial (0 to 85oC) and industrial (-40o to 85oC)
temperature ranges
* Compact 5x5mm 32QFN (LAN8710) and 4x4mm 24QFN (LAN8720) RoHS compliant
packages

With the addition of the LAN8710 and LAN8720 PHYs, SMSC`s family of 10/100
Ethernet transceivers has been expanded to support customer products that
require a smaller footprint and lower power solution without compromising on
features. Additionally, SMSC provides an easy migration path from current
LAN8700 transceivers to the new LAN8710 and LAN8720 transceivers with minimal
redesign efforts. SMSC offers one of the broadest Ethernet connectivity
solutions in the industry, which include stand-alone transceivers, MAC
controllers, integrated single-chip MAC+PHY products and embedded networking
processors.
