WASHINGTON, April 24 | Fri Apr 24, 2009 12:06pm EDT

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - The former chief executive officer at Freddie Mac FRE.N who stepped down last month will return to help the company after the chief financial officer's sudden death, Freddie Mac said on Friday.

The mortgage finance company's chief financial officer, David Kellermann, was found dead in his home on Wednesday. David Moffett, who left as CEO in March, will return on an interim basis to help the company through its present difficulties, Freddie Mac said in a statement.

"I am grateful to David for offering to assist us during this challenging time," said John Koskinen, the company's current chief executive. "He knows the company well from his time as chief executive and has built an impressive career in finance and accounting leadership as an executive with other leading public companies."
