UPDATE 1-Aspect Medical posts surprise Q1 profit

April 29 (Reuters) - Brain monitoring technology provider Aspect Medical Systems Inc ASPM.O reported a surprise first-quarter profit, helped by higher worldwide sensor revenue.
The company expects second-quarter results to range from a loss of 1 cent a share to a profit of 1 cent a share, on sales of $24.0 million to $25.5 million.
Analysts on average were expecting the company to post a loss of 7 cents a share, on revenue of $25.4 million for the second quarter, according to Reuters Estimates.
For the first quarter, international sensor revenue rose 17 percent to $5.6 million, while U.S. sensor revenue grew 1 percent to $16.0 million.
The company posted first-quarter profit of $1.9 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with a loss of $235,000, or 1 cent a share, a year ago.
On a non-GAAP basis the company earned 16 cents a share.
Analysts on average expected the company to post a loss of 9 cents a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $25.1 million.
Shares of the company were up 33 cents, or 7 percent, at $4.80 in early morning trade Wednesday on Nasdaq.
