Public Education Campaign Highlights the Ups and Downs of Marriage WASHINGTON, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Less than half (49 percent) of U.S. households are now composed of married couples, with or without children. And, today's young adults have a much lower chance for enjoying a healthy marriage than earlier generations. However, a nationally-representative survey found that young adults not only aspire to be married but they plan to be married for life. How will they do it when they very likely are unprepared for this life-long commitment? To view the Multimedia News Release, go to: http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/healthymarriage/37224/ The National Healthy Marriage Resource Center (NHMRC) has launched a public education campaign featuring public service announcements (PSAs) that provide young people with the recognition that weddings and the early stages of a relationship are exciting, but to build a lifetime relationship takes work. "We have found that when talking with young adults, they are hungry for information about improving their relationships -- they just don't know where to look," said Mary Myrick, NHMRC Program Director. "Each PSA encourages young people -- or anyone planning a lifelong commitment -- to visit TwoOfUs.org to obtain information and resources for any relationship challenge they may be facing." Specifically, The National Healthy Marriage Resource Center's TwoOfUs.org supports couples at every stage of their relationships by providing proven tips and tools, as well as local resources for those who may need more assistance. "Perhaps even more important is the site's interactive community environment," adds Myrick. "You can receive and share ideas from your peers, as well as marriage experts." Visit www.TwoOfUs.org for more information. Established in 2006, the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center is a clearinghouse that provides high quality, balanced, and timely information and resources on healthy marriage and relationships. NHMRC is primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families. The national survey referenced above was conducted by TRU. This quantitative survey of 3,600 young adults, aged 18 to 30, found that 82 percent of young adults aspire to be married and believe that a healthy marriage is within reach. Further, the #1 reason to take get married is "love," (87 percent) followed closely by "lifelong commitment" (72 percent). Only 31% saw "having children" as a reason to get married.
