Survey Shows Voters Prefer Opportunity over Fairness and Are Skeptical on
Spending
WASHINGTON--(Business Wire)--
Voters are deeply skeptical about the amount of money President Obama proposes
for the government to spend, tax, and borrow for bailouts and other spending
programs that produce few private sector jobs. Independents, who hold the
balance of power in this electorate, are closer to Republicans than to Democrats
on these fiscal issues according to a poll released today by Resurgent Republic.

During a conference call held to discuss the findings, original board member, Ed
Gillespie stated, "We think [Resurgent Republic] will be a valuable asset to
those who care about public policy, especially at the federal level, those who
are looking to inform themselves about how voters see certain issues, what
matters to them, what they want to see responded to and how they react to those
responses."

Whit Ayres, original board member and respected public affairs professional with
a long track record of helping to influence public opinion, noted "President
Obama`s job approval is a bit higher than both President Clinton`s and the first
President Bush`s. It`s a little bit lower than President Reagan`s after the
attempt on his life.

"America remains a center-right country. They perceive Barack Obama as a
liberal, and they perceive themselves as center-right. They voted for him not to
support liberal policies but because he represented change. To show how the
country remains center-right, we ask several questions about the general
philosophy of government.

"One that I like particular is whether or not government should promote
opportunity by fostering job growth, encouraging entrepreneurs and allowing
people to keep more of what they earn, or should government promote fairness by
narrowing the gap between rich and poor, spreading the wealth, and making sure
that all economic outcomes are more equal. By a two to one majority, Americans
believe government should promote opportunity, and that is particularly true of
independents by a 65 to 20 percent margin.Independents look more like
Republicans than like Democrats on that measure.

"And similarly, Americans are very skeptical about the amount of money that Mr.
Obama is proposing to spend, tax and borrow for bailouts and other spending
programs. A majority opposes the President`s proposed budget of $3.6 trillion
with its $1.4 trillion deficit. And, once again, independents are closer to
Republicans than Democrats.

"It`s also interesting that when you ask people what the maximum income tax rate
should be at the federal level, 84 percent of Americans say some rate below 35
percent. So Republicans are on favorable ground, resisting the amount of
spending, taxing and borrowing in the President`s budget.

"Moreover, if you look at some of the national security issues, it`s very clear
that a majority of Americans support the more conservative alternative. For
example, a more - a strong majority believes that Guantanamo Bay helps protect
America rather than undermines our moral authority. That`s a consistent pattern
in public opinion research where Americans believe the more conservative message
rather than the more liberal message on national security. Once again,
independents are closer to Republicans than to Democrats on Guantanamo Bay."
