Safeway Employees Overwhelmingly Ratify Labor Contract

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(Business Wire)--
Safeway Inc. (NYSE:SWY) announced today that on April 28, 2009, its employees
belonging to the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1439 ratified by a
wide margin the tentative agreement reached between the Company and the Local. 

The new four-year contract and yesterday`s ratification cover 12 stores and
approximately 785 employees in the Greater Spokane area.
