Ford invests $550 million to build small cars, electric vehicle

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co said it would invest $550 million to build new global small cars, electric vehicle at its Michigan plant.

* Says this will be followed by production in 2011 of a battery-electric focus

* Says investment will support about 3,200 jobs at Michigan assembly

* Says production for the North American market of the new global Ford focus begins next year

* Says will consolidate its operations from Wayne assembly plant
