Public Transportation Services a Particular Concern, Latest Ouch Point Study
fromOpinion Research Corporation Finds
PRINCETON, N.J.--(Business Wire)--
According to a special edition of the Ouch Point survey from Opinion Research
Corporation, an infoGROUP company (NASDAQ: IUSA), when considering services and
facilities provided by the town in which they reside, 36 percent of those polled
said they do not believe they are getting their tax dollars worth. In addition,
35 percent indicated that they do not trust their local government to do what is
right, 27 percent would describe the quality of life in their city as either
fair or poor, 21 percent think local government is headed in the wrong
direction, and 18 percent would not recommend their town to others as a good
place to live.

"Our findings speak to a clear challenge facing local governments in terms of
their ability to attract new businesses and residents to their municipality,"
said Rebecca Elmore-Yalch, Senior Vice President at Opinion Research
Corporation. "A growing body of research suggests that quality of life is
becoming an increasingly important consideration in business location decisions,
which is particularly true of high-technology firms that are less tied to
traditional location factors such as transportation costs, proximity to raw
materials and cheap labor. People also rate quality of life as the single most
important factor in terms of deciding where to live - 36 percent of those polled
cited this reason for making a move."

Of those services that received a Poor/Fair rating by respondents, public
transportation pulled well ahead of the pack at 47 percent. "Gas prices, the
economy, concerns about the environment/air quality and congestion are all
contributing to increased consumer demand for alternative modes of
transportation that work," continued Elmore-Yalch, an expert in public
transportation research. "At the same time, many transit systems are faced with
significant budget shortfalls, forcing them to cut services. However, as
effective transportation systems are a critical factor in attracting and
retaining residents, improvements to and investments in this area should be one
of local government`s highest priorities."

The survey also found that nearly one out of four respondents (23 percent) would
vote against their local leadership based on the quality or level of services
provided, suggesting that citizens are fully prepared to make their votes count
in the future.
