SANTIAGO, Chile, May 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LAN Airlines S.A. and
its subsidiaries, ("LAN" or "the Company") (NYSE: LFL; IPSA: LAN), one of the
leading airlines in Latin America, today reported its preliminary monthly
traffic statistics and punctuality indicators for April 2009.
System passenger traffic for April increased 19.9% as capacity rose 13.0%.
As a result, the Company's load factor increased 4.4 points to 76.6%.
International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 70% of total
passenger traffic.
Domestic passenger traffic in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador rose
39.9% as capacity increased 30.7%. As a consequence, the domestic load factor
for the month increased 4.8 points to 73.7%. The significant increase in
domestic traffic is in line with the "low cost" model implemented in the
Chilean and Peruvian domestic markets, which in April 2009 celebrated its
second anniversary. Additionally, in April 2009 the Company initiated
operations in the Ecuadorian domestic market.
International passenger traffic for April rose 13.1% as capacity increased
6.6%. Accordingly, the international passenger load factor for the month
increased 4.5 points to 77.9%. International capacity was mainly driven by an
increase in operations on certain regional routes, as well as routes to the
South Pacific and Europe.
In line with the decrease in import and export markets worldwide, during
the month of April cargo traffic decreased 25.4%. This decrease was mainly due
to a slowdown in import and export markets in Latin America, especially the
weaker seed export season in 2009, compared to March and April 2008. In line
with the decrease in demand, capacity fell 17.7%, mainly through the reduction
of ACMI leases, generating a 6.8 point decrease in the load factor to 65.6%.
During April, 91.0% of the Company's total flights left on time based on a
fifteen-minute standard (all departures leaving within fifteen minutes of the
scheduled departure time are considered as "on-time"), showing no change
compared to the same month of 2008.
