UPDATE 1-Medtronic to add 1,400 jobs in diabetes division
* Medtronic to open second U.S. diabetes division campus
* Expects to add 1,400 workers at Texas site over 5 years
* Jobs will be in customer service and education
CHICAGO, May 11 (Reuters) - Medtronic Inc (MDT.N) on Monday said it will add 1,400 jobs over the next five years at a new customer support facility in San Antonio, Texas, as it expands its growing diabetes business.
The Minneapolis-based medical device maker, which recently has cut jobs in slower-growth divisions such as cardiac rhythm management, said it expects to begin recruiting immediately to staff the new 150,000-square-foot facility, which is slated to open in late summer.
The diabetes division, which makes insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, will hire customer service, training and education personnel at the Texas site, said Medtronic spokesman Steve Sabicer.
The division's Northridge, California, facility will remain its home base, Sabicer said.
"We're moving into a facility that addresses our five-year growth targets," he said. (Reporting by Susan Kelly; Editing Bernard Orr)
