FACTBOX: Five facts about credit card use in the U.S.
(Reuters) - President Barack Obama pressed the U.S. Congress on Thursday to pass credit card reform measures to crack down on abusive practices by credit card companies.
He also said Americans have been somewhat complicit in the economic problems the country faces today because they lived beyond their means and counted on credit too much.
Below is a survey of credit card use based on data released by the White House:
- Credit card debt has increased by 25 percent in the past 10 years, reaching $963 billion in January 2009.
- Seventy-eight percent of U.S. families have a credit card, and 44 percent of families carried a balance on their credit card.
- The average amount of credit card debt among families with a balance was $7,300 in 2007.
- Delinquency rates have increased by more than a third since the end of 2006. One-fifth of those carrying credit card debt pay an interest rate above 20 percent.
- Credit card issuers collect $15 billion annually in penalty fees, an estimated 10 percent of total credit card industry revenues.
