MINNEAPOLIS, May 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT)
today announced that it has become a founding member of the Alliance to Make
US Healthiest, a new coalition that strives to help U.S. citizens become more
physically and emotionally healthy. The Alliance aims to help the U.S. become
the healthiest nation in a healthier world. It strives to create a national
movement that promotes health and well-being in the places where families
work, live, go to school, shop and play.
"We support the vision of the Alliance that promotes an integrated national
health system where people value health and work together to achieve optimal
health for all," said John Mulligan, Target Vice President of Human Resources.
"We view our participation in the Alliance as part of our civic
responsibility. Its vision on health ties closely to ours, focusing on
promoting prevention and wellness and improving the nation's overall health."
As a member of the Alliance, Target has pledged to provide leadership and
foster actions and policies that encourage and sustain health. As such, Target
is committed to providing health and wellness benefits for its employees
(called team members) that make it easier and more affordable for all Target
team members and their families to get and stay healthy.
Founded by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Association of
County and City Health Officials, the driving values of the Alliance include:
-- Health is valued as a personal, community, national and international
asset.
-- Healthier options and policies are the "default choice" for
all people.
-- Health protection is understood as a strategic economic imperative for
nations and businesses.
-- People have the information they need to make decisions when, where
and
how they need it.
-- Health and well-being considerations, including health equity, are
integrated into societal policies across sectors and at all levels.
-- People feel confident that the health system operates in their best
interest to promote their health and well-being and provides effective
and affordable care.
"It is vital for corporations to take an active role in the shaping of health
legislation on behalf of their employees," said Dr. James Nicholson Baird,
Jr., a member of the Advisory Committee to the CDC and chief executive officer
of the Alliance to Make US Healthiest. "Target has had a long and successful
