LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA, May 18 (MARKET WIRE) --
Since November 2008, Art & Creativity for Healing, a non-profit
organization that facilitates fine art classes and workshops for
children, teens and adults suffering from abuse, illness, grief or
stress, has been working with students at San Onofre Elementary School as
part of the "Healing for Heroes and their Families" program.
Initiated in 2008 at Camp Pendleton, the "Healing for Heroes and their
Families" program uses collage, journaling and painting techniques to help
military personnel and their families process feelings associated with the
rigors of military life, including overseas deployments. Earlier this
year, the program was expanded to serve military families that have one
or more family members dealing with the special needs of enlisted men and
women who are working through war-related experiences.
As the school year comes to a close, San Onofre Elementary School has
elected to celebrate the success of the "Healing for Heroes and their
Families" program with a special "Art for Healing Day" on Friday, May 22.
During "Art for Healing Day," all 650 of the school's students are
expected to participate in a school-wide "Sending Love to those Deployed"
drawing project. As part of the project, each child will use color
pencils and markers to create "Sending Love" paper cards that will be
sent to the men and women of Camp Pendleton who are currently deployed
overseas.
"The 'Art for Healing Day' at San Onofre Elementary School will provide
children in Kindergarten through eighth grade an opportunity to interact
with our volunteers and learn more about what it feels like to express
feelings of compassion and care using artistic expression," said Laurie
Zagon, founder/director, Art & Creativity for Healing. "For children who
have already participated in the 'Healing for Heroes and their Families'
program, it is our hope that by creating cards for the men and women who
are serving overseas, each child will be able to expand their use of the
Art for Healing method as a venue for expressing their feelings of fear
and hurt they may be experiencing in their own personal journey."
Recently, in gratitude for Art & Creativity for Healing's service to the
students at San Onofre Elementary, school officials nominated the
organization for the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District's "2009
Community Cornucopia Award." Art & Creativity for Healing will be
presented with the award on Monday, June 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the William H.
Frazier School located at 1835 Gum Tree Lane in Fallbrook.
