Technology Solutions Company to Model System Performance and Ensure Safe Co-Existence with Air Traffic Control MCLEAN, Va.--(Business Wire)-- Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, was awarded a $1.5 million delivery order to provide modeling and simulation (M&S) support for the military`s new Mark XIIA Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system. The work, which falls under the Alion-operated Modeling and Simulation Information Analysis Center (MSIAC) contract, aims to ensure that the new IFF provides timely and accurate ID and situational awareness to the warfighter to prevent casualties from friendly fire. Using a radio-based ID system, IFF enables the warfighter to differentiate friendly aircraft, vehicles and forces from enemy ones. Because the Mark XIIA Mode 5 IFF incorporates radio waveforms, Alion`s work will also aim to ensure that the waveforms are compatible with Air Traffic Control (ATC) standards and do not interfere with airwaves that support the safe operations of aircraft. Under the contract, Alion will evaluate the performance of Mode 5 on selected platforms and on the ID performance of the IFF interrogator, which queries potential combat targets and conveys ID information. M&S and performance results will be provided to the Department of Defense International ATC Radar System, IFF, Mark XII Systems (AIMS) Program Office, which is under the direction of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition Technology & Logistics and Warner Robins Air Logistics Center/Engineering Flight Test Squadron with John Seereiter (Chief Engineer) and Victor Hunsicker (Program Manager) at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. "These improvements can help ensure our warfighters` safety by giving them more effective identification tools," said Sue Archer, Alion Senior Vice President and Manager of the Operational Solutions Group. "Our engineering design and analysis will help forge the next generation of technology in combat." The period of performance ends April 2012. The work is sponsored by the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office, 1901 N. Beauregard St., Suite 500, Alexandria, VA 22311. The Alion-operated MSIAC, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) center for integrated support of the M&S community, provides broad support for M&S programs throughout the government. In addition, M&S University, developed by Alion for the MSIAC, provides training on using M&S to make training, acquisition, logistics and experimentation more effective. The AIMS Program Office is directed by the DoD and includes participation from the Air Force, Army and Navy. It supports the National Security Agency, Federal Aviation Administration, ICAO, RTCA, NATO, allied and coalition countries, Homeland Security and industrial vendors. It is responsible for system-level configuration management, and certification of interoperability and minimum performance of Mark XII/XIIA. It also focuses on reducing the proliferation of IFF equipment. Currently, there are more than 30,000 air, ground, sea and surface weapon platforms that depend on Mark XII/XIIA systems for cooperative combat identification.
