CHARLESTON, WV, May 27 (MARKET WIRE) --
As the economic recession cuts into philanthropic giving to colleges and
universities around the country, the Associated Press reports Massey
Energy Co. (NYSE: MEE) has donated $500,000 "for scholarships in mining
and civil engineering at West Virginia University and WVU Institute of
Technology."
The scholarships, which are awarded primarily to students in Central
Appalachia, are an investment in West Virginia's future, according to
Chief Executive Don Blankenship, who hopes to attract the next generation
of engineering students. Creating educational opportunities for area
students is the best way to ensure good paying jobs for the community for
years to come.
Additionally, the AP reports "Massey is also giving $260,000 for public
school outreach programs and for internships, career fairs and speakers."
Massey believes their private investment of resources will have far
reaching, positive effects for Central Appalachia.
