How Do We Ensure a Full, Fair and Impartial Hearing?

Roundtable Discussion Thurs. Morning, May 28, Sponsored by the Association of
Administrative Law Judges Who Handle These Cases Will Offer Answers

WASHINGTON--(Business Wire)--
The Social Security disability adjudication system is in crisis. Years of
under-funding and a decrease in the number of support staff have created an
enormous backlog of pending hearings and unconscionably long waiting times for
decisions in disability claims. Currently the backlog stands at more then
750,000 cases and many Americans wait two years or more for a hearing.

The pressure on judges to reduce the backlog and issue decisions threatens to
undermine due process and the careful consideration of each claim. The Social
Security Administration is experimenting with ways to speed up hearings. More
Americans use these courts than any other in the federal system. How do we
ensure a full, fair and impartial hearing?
