Social Security Disability Benefits Awarded Disparately Across the US Reports

CALABASAS, Calif., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- In a recent survey of over 200
social security lawyers, www.social-security-lawyers.net found a significant
disparity of SSDI awards based upon geographic location. Though SSDI is
administered on a federal level, there appears to be a wide variance in the
application of SSDI guidelines by adjudicators. While some of these guidelines
are based upon geographic economies, the variance seems to suggest a more
indiscriminate application of awards.

For instance, the award for a certain disability may change depending on the
district within the nation. A disability claim may be awarded in a certain
district and be rejected in another. Even when a disability is awarded in two
distinct districts, the amount of the award may be significantly higher or
lower. The initial results of the survey were revealed after
www.social-security-lawyers.net conducted a survey of its several hundred
social security lawyer members.

The study seems to indicate little reason for the disparity except for the
attitude of the judge for the hearing. While some judges appear liberal and
award something for most significant ailments, other, more conservative judges
seem to apply these guidelines more rigidly; rejecting these same claims, and
demanding far more documentation.

While these findings are preliminary they may indicate flaws within the Social
Security Disability Insurance system. Additional findings from the study may
indicate more specific causes for these variances.
