Strong Buying Power, Avid Entertainment Consumers, and Social Influencers
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
Frank N. Magid Associates and Vuze today released the results of a survey
comparing Vuze users to a national sample of Internet users, ages 18 to 44. The
results revealed that, contrary to popular perception, users of peer-to-peer
("P2P") technology are avid supporters of the entertainment industry, who spend
considerable money on traditional media and entertainment.
The Vuze / Magid survey shows that the Vuze audience attends 34% more movies in
theaters, purchases 34% more DVDs, and rents 24% more movies for a fee than the
average Internet audience in a given year. In other words, P2P users have money
to spend, and they spend much of it on traditional entertainment.
According to Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors, "The clear message to
the entertainment industry is that Vuze users aren't simply your customers -
they're your best customers." Vuze CEO Gilles BianRosa emphasized, "The
entertainment industry should embrace these top consumers, and do more to
encourage them to spend their entertainment dollars online."
Specifically, the Magid study dispelled a number of myths about P2P users:
Myth #1:P2P Users are low income
Truth: The Vuze audience has strong buying power, and an equal share of high
income households when compared to a national sample.
* 17% of the Vuze audience earns more than $100,000 per year (the same as the
national sample)
Myth #2:P2P Users are not willing to pay for entertainment
Truth: The Vuze audience consists of avid, paying entertainment fans. When
compared to a national sample, Vuze users on average:
* Attend 34% more movies in theaters (8.2 vs. 6.1 per year)
* Purchase 34% more DVDs (9.0 vs. 6.7 per year)
* Rent 24% more movies for a fee (15.7 vs. 12.7 per year)
Additional evidence of Vuze spending power:
* 65% own an HDTV (vs. 60%)
* 53% have a home theater sound system connected to their TV (vs. 39%)
* 41% have a smart phone (vs. 28%)
* 35% own a high-definition DVD player (vs. 27%)
Myth #3:P2P Users are anti-social misfits
Truth: Vuze users are connected trend-setters and influencers. When compared to
a national sample, Vuze users on average are:
* Connected to 55% more people on social networks (300 vs 193)
* More likely to share opinions about new technologies (52% vs. 41%)
