Continental AG to cut 2,600 automotive jobs-paper

FRANKFURT, June 5 | Fri Jun 5, 2009 1:15pm EDT

FRANKFURT, June 5 (Reuters) - German automotive supplier Continental AG (CONG.DE) plans to cut about 10 percent of jobs at its Automotive division, a spokeswoman for the company told German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The company would cut about 2,600 jobs at the division by 2010, she said.

German union IG Metall Bayern had said in a statement that Continental planned to cut more than 2,000 jobs, of which more than 600 were located in the southern German city of Regensburg.

Continental, which is struggling with a collapse of orders from the auto industry, recently said it was cutting production at two of its tyre plants to offset sliding demand and could even close them entirely. (Reporting by Maria Sheahan; Editing by Rupert Winchester)
