Irish governing party loses EU seat for Dublin
DUBLIN |
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's ruling Fianna Fail party lost a crucial European Parliament seat for Dublin to a Eurosceptic rival on Monday, heaping more pressure on a government reeling from results in local elections.
The loss of Eoin Ryan's seat to Joe Higgins of the Socialist Party left Fianna Fail without a European Parliament member in the capital and raised further questions about the future of Prime Minister Brian Cowen.
Higgins had campaigned successfully against the Lisbon Treaty, which aims to reform the EU's creaking institutions after a series of enlargements, in a referendum in 2008.
