Fed's Fisher says U.S. economy "out of the end zone"

CHICAGO, June 9 | Tue Jun 9, 2009 11:15am EDT

CHICAGO, June 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. economy is "less at peril" now than several months ago following aggressive actions by the Federal Reserve and the White House, Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher said on Tuesday.

"We are out of the end zone, still marching down the field," Fisher said in an interview with Fox Business Network.

Fisher said the ability of several banks to repay funds provided under the TARP program, which was announced earlier on Tuesday, was "a healthy sign."

"Most of the firms that I know that have taken the TARP money of course are eager to get it back. It was a bridge," Fisher said.
