SAN JOSE, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) and the American Public Transportation
Association (APTA) will host a Norman Y. Mineta National Transportation Security
Policy Summit at the APTA Rail Conference in Chicago on Thursday, June 18. The
summit topic is "Selective Screening of Rail Passengers: An Evaluation of the
Pilot Tests." John P. Sammon, Asst. Administrator, Transportation Sector Network
Management of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will keynote.

The summit will be a day of presentations and direct interaction with top
government and private-sector experts. The presentations will feature updates
since MTI`s last summit on this topic in March 2007, including the results of
pilot tests. The summit also will include results of the latest research and
evaluations of demonstration projects, plus a panel of experts from system
operators and those with applicable expertise.

Panelists include Brian Michael Jenkins, an international expert on terrorism
and director of MTI`s National Transportation Security Center of Excellence; Joe
Crane, commander of Amtrak`s Mobile Team; Paul MacMillan, chief of the
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Transit Police; Ronald J. Mascina,
deputy chief of the New York MTA Police; Jesus Ojeda, security coordinator of
the Southern California Regional Rail Authority; William F. Rooney, vice
president of Amtrak`s Office of Security Strategy and Special Operations; and
Dave Schlesinger, course manager of Transit Safety and Security for the
Transportation Safety Institute.

"In recent years, several transit operators have implemented selective passenger
screening programs in response to terrorist threats," said Mr. Jenkins. "This
session will review lessons learned and explain variations in implementation,
including preparation; public education, response and acceptance; selection
methods; use of technology and canines; legal issues; effects on crime; and
other issues."

This free event will be a valuable resource for public and private
transportation executives, policy makers, and public safety and first-responder
managers charged with providing security and operational continuity of our
nation`s surface transportation systems.

Space is at a premium for this important summit, and qualified participants are
encouraged to register now. Email Heather Rachels at APTA hrachels@apta.com or

ABOUT THE MINETA TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE:

The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) was established by Congress in 1991 as
part of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) and was
reauthorized in 1998. The institute is funded by Congress through the US DOT`s
Research and Innovative Technology Administration, by the California Legislature
through the Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and by other public and
private grants and donations. The US DOT selected MTI as a national "Center of
Excellence" following a 2002 competition.

The Institute has a Board of Trustees whose internationally-respected members
represent all major surface transportation modes. MTI`s focus on policy and
management resulted from a board assessment of the industry`s unmet needs and
led directly to choosing the San José State University College of Business as
the Institute`s home. MTI conducts research, education, and information and
technology transfer focusing on transportation policy and management topics and
issues. Visit www.transweb.sjsu.edu
