U.N.'s Ban says respect Iranian people's will
UNITED NATIONS |
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday the will of the Iranian people should be fully respected and he was closely following the situation after Iran's disputed presidential election.
"The position of me and the United Nations is that the genuine will of the Iranian people should be fully respected," Ban told reporters, adding that he was watching how an investigation of complaints about the poll would turn out.
Official results said incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had easily won Friday's vote but supporters of losing candidate Mirhossein Mousavi say the election was stolen from him and have been demonstrating for the past two days.
Iran's 12-man Guardian Council said it would rule within 10 days on two official complaints it had received from Mousavi and another defeated candidate.
"I have to watch ... this situation, how it evolves," Ban said.
