Obama to seek merger of U.S. bank overseers-source
WASHINGTON, June 16 |
WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) - The Office of Thrift Supervision and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, both U.S. banking regulatory agencies, will merge under the Obama administration's financial regulation reform plan, said a congressional aide on Tuesday, citing a briefing given to congressional staff by administration officials.
Treasury Department representatives were giving briefings in both the Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon ahead of a formal unveiling expected on Wednesday of the administration's sweeping reform plan.
The plan will not call for a merger of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the source said.
In addition, it will call for the creation of a council of regulators to work with the Federal Reserve on monitoring systemic risk in the economy, with the Securities and Exchange Commission among council members, the source said. (Reporting by Kevin Drawbaugh; Editing by Dan Grebler)
