WESTFORD, MA, Jun 16 (MARKET WIRE) --
EnterpriseDB(R), the leading enterprise open source database company,
today announced the general availability of the latest version of Postgres
Plus(R) Advanced Server, the company's flagship RDBMS product, which is
based on the award-winning PostgreSQL open source database. More than 300
beta customers tested the product prior to its general availability
release. The latest version of Postgres Plus Advanced Server features the
company's fifth-generation Oracle compatibility technology, which enables
more companies to move more Oracle applications more easily to the
EnterpriseDB database. In addition, the new "Infinite Cache" provides
massive scalability at low cost by leveraging commodity hardware and
eliminating custom programming. More information about Postgres Plus
Advanced Server is available at

"All the new features and functionality in the latest version of Postgres
Plus Advanced Server are inspired by customer input from organizations
like hi5 Networks and The Los Angeles Times," said Ed Boyajian, chief
executive officer, EnterpriseDB. "PostgreSQL users seeking an
enterprise-class feature set and cutting-edge performance, as well as
Oracle customers looking for low-cost, highly reliable RDBMS alternatives
that require only minimal migration effort, should be considering
Postgres Plus Advanced Server today."

    Fifth-Generation Oracle Compatibility

The latest version of Postgres Plus Advanced Server provides a wide range
of new features for deeper Oracle compatibility, ensuring that the cost of
migration and adoption is minimal and preserving the investments that
companies have already made in Oracle technology. These features include
enhanced transaction control, support for advanced Oracle object types and
packages, and tooling enhancements that facilitate the migration of Oracle
schema and data to Postgres Plus Advanced Server.

    Massive Scalability with Infinite Cache

The latest version of Postgres Plus Advanced Server also contains a
horizontal scaling solution built on memcached called Infinite Cache,
which provides dramatically increased performance and scalability for
read-mostly applications when compared with standard PostgreSQL. With
Infinite Cache, database performance scales without performance
degradation as commodity cache blades are added, providing, on a single
machine, orders-of-magnitude performance increases compared to standard
PostgreSQL. The innovative solution is transparent to the database
application, eliminating the need for custom programming, and it is
fault-tolerant to cache blade failures.

"In our 2008 report, 'Turning the Tables,' we noted that adoption of open
source databases has been widespread but shallow, but that open source
poses a long-term threat to the established vendors," said Matt Aslett,
analyst, enterprise software, The 451 Group. "With its latest release,
EnterpriseDB continues to enhance its Oracle compatibility technology,
reducing the time, risk, and expense of migrating applications from Oracle
to EnterpriseDB's PostgreSQL-powered database."

    Increased Performance and Security

EnterpriseDB's new database software also includes "Asynchronous
Pre-Fetch," a high-performance query solution that optimizes commodity
RAID solutions and is well-suited for data warehouse and ETL queries. To
enhance security, support is also included for LDAP and pluggable
authentication module (PAM) authentication infrastructures, and a new
feature called "EDB*Wrap" protects stored procedures for secure
distribution of proprietary or sensitive code.
