Pool Safety Council Applauds the Choice of Tenenbaum for Consumer Product
Safety Commission

WASHINGTON, June 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pool Safety Council praises
the Obama administration for nominating Inez Moore Tenenbaum to be chairman of
the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

With her exemplary record as the state superintendent of education in South
Carolina, Tenenbaum possesses the skills necessary to make this country's
swimming pools and spas the safest in the world. As an educator, Tenenbaum
was responsible for ensuring that our schools are safe and healthy places for
learning, so it will be a natural extension for her to see that our pools meet
the highest standards including implementing The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool
and Spa Safety Act.

"For children aged one to fourteen, drowning is the second-most common cause
of accidental death," said PSC Spokesman John Procter. "We are confident that
the new chairman will make pool safety and making our pools compliant with the
new requirements a top priority this summer."

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act is named after the
granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker, who died in an
entrapment accident in 2002. The law stipulates that before opening this year,
all public pools and spas must to be outfitted with approved safety drain
covers. Public pools with single drain pools and spas must be outfitted with
an approved anti-entrapment device, such as a safety vacuum release system.
The Pool Safety Council recommends the installation layers of protection in
all pools, including the use of approved anti-entrapment drain covers, as well
as other approved systems or devices.
