St. John's Seminary to Sponsor Lecture on Life and Legacy of Cardinal Timothy
Manning
Monsignor Clement Connolly to Lead Lecture at Holy Family Parish in South
Pasadena next Tuesday, June 23, 2009, the 20th Anniversary of Cardinal
Manning's Death
CAMARILLO, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- St. John's Seminary announced today
that it will sponsor a lecture on the Life and Legacy of Cardinal Timothy
Manning by Monsignor Clement Connolly on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Holy
Family Parish in South Pasadena, 1527 Fremont Avenue (at Fremont and Rollin
Street). The lecture begins at 7:15 PM and will be followed by a reception.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For reservations and information
please call (805) 389-2035 or write advancement@stjohnsem.edu
"As a young man growing up in Ireland, Timothy Manning discerned a call to the
priesthood and to be a missionary. Rather than seeking to serve in his
homeland, young Timothy chose to commit himself to the Diocese of Los Angeles.
His journey brought untold blessings to the southland and to us here at St.
John's Seminary," says Craig Cox, Rector/President at St. John's.
Ordained by Bishop John J. Cantwell on June 16, 1934, this holy priest gave
his life in service to his new home for 55 years. Over 43 of those years he
served as a bishop -- Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, the founding Bishop of
the Diocese of Fresno, and Archbishop of Los Angeles.
As a bishop, Cardinal Manning ordained 349 priests and confirmed approximately
650,000 people. During his time as Archbishop he dedicated 30 churches,
established the House of Prayer for Priests, and established the permanent
diaconate in the Archdiocese. In 1978 he voted in two papal elections (the
conclaves that selected Popes John Paul I and John Paul II).
In his doctoral dissertation, Father Manning focused on educating seminarians.
"It's no wonder consequently that Cardinal Manning had a special love for St.
John's Seminary and visited the campus often," says Monsignor Cox.
The twentieth anniversary of the death of Cardinal Manning will be June 23,
2009. Later this year, November 14 will be the 100th anniversary of his
birth.
In gratitude for his service and his sterling example of priestly holiness,
St. John's Seminary is inviting all the people of the Archdiocese to help
establish a Chair in Priestly Spirituality as a tribute to Cardinal Manning.
"We encourage donors to pledge over the next six months, between the June
anniversary of Cardinal Manning's death and the November anniversary of his
birth or to make a one-time gift," says Monsignor Cox. "We encourage everyone
to attend the free lectures at Holy Family with Monsignor Clem Connolly.
These will be very special evenings."
Phillip Hawley, chairman of PM Hawley, Inc., and formerly of Carter Hawley
Hale, which operated the Broadway Department Stores in Los Angeles, co-chairs
the Honorary Committee at St. John's for the Cardinal Manning Chair. He says:
"We are all the beneficiaries of Cardinal Manning's remarkable service to the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Our lives have been enriched as a result of this
good shepherd. Establishing a Chair in Priestly Spirituality in Cardinal
Manning's name will be a most fitting memorial and a continuing reminder of
all that this good priest has done to support and advance the education of
seminarians. Please join us by giving your support to the founding of the
Cardinal Manning Chair."
