Conference call at 1:30 p.m. TODAY The following advisory is being released by the Democratic Governors Association: Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell thought he would be the clear leader heading into the Virginia general election, but he is beginning the race severely wounded. "The candidate who was most damaged in the Democratic primary was Bob McDonnell and now he's limping into the general," said Nathan Daschle, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association, which gave $3 million to the progressive organization that educated voters about McDonnell's record on unemployment. "The more voters learned about McDonnell, the more they rejected him. His stance on rejecting unemployment benefits soured Virginians on him, and the ads critiquing his stance triple voters' negative perceptions about him." According to polling by the Democratic Governors Association, Sen. Creigh Deeds continues to lead his opponent by four points, despite McDonnell's clear path to the nomination and unprecedented $2 million investment in television ads early in the race. A copy of the polling memo is available on request. The ads, which were run by Common Sense Virginia, explained McDonnell's heartless rejection of $125 million in federal unemployment funds. The ads ran statewide for a month leading up to the Democratic primary.
