LEXINGTON, MA, Jun 16 (MARKET WIRE) --
Ipswitch Inc.'s Network Management division, a developer of cost
effective network management solutions, today announced the release of
WhatsConnected version 1.5. This latest version of the layer 2/3
discovery plug-in for WhatsUp Gold provides full support for VMware based
virtualized systems and infrastructures while continuing to provide the
key functions network professionals need to discover, map, search and
document their physical networks.

"We see virtualization as a progressive and viable option for networks in
the midmarket and SMB/E markets," states Ennio Carboni, President of the
Network Management division at Ipswitch. "We also know from customer
experience that virtualization places new stresses on infrastructure and
the essential quality of experience variable. Our recent acquisition of
HourGlass and on-going internal and external investments will enable our
customers, network engineers and administrators with the ability to manage
virtualized environments with the same level of confidence they have in
the past with wired, traditional networks."

Information about VMware environments discovered and mapped by
WhatsConnected v1.5, using Virtual Infrastructure Management (VIM)
credentials, include: base hardware, VMware OS and all virtualized
machines and operating systems, and provides the associations,
interdependencies and characteristics of every virtualized system.

With full support of SNMP v3 credentials for device discovery,
WhatsConnected v1.5 uses the strongest possible authentication and
encryption methods to comply with corporate security initiatives.
Discovery configuration also includes the addition of SSH credentials to
establish secure connectivity to systems that require authorization to
access them.

WhatsConnected v1.5 is designed to be flexible and simple to use, meaning
that network changes and potential conflicts are more quickly diagnosed
and effectively managed. It allows devices to be categorized and viewed in
whichever way is most convenient, whilst enabling all data on devices to
be retained and presented at a glance. The new layer 2 and 3 discovery and
visualization tool goes far beyond typical IP discovery, providing
detailed hardware inventory and configuration information down to the
individual port, presenting all the information needed to manage networks
and virtualized systems.

As a fully integrated plug-in for all editions of WhatsUp Gold v12.4,
WhatsConnected provides a simple approach to understanding network
infrastructures as well as identifying and creating powerful monitoring
strategies. WhatsConnected v1.5 adds a whole new dynamic to your network
monitoring arsenal, giving you a complete view of your network's topology.

"We have been using WhatsConnected very effectively to diagram and
document our network, and the information obtained has enhanced our usage
of WhatsUp Gold by allowing our staff to track and resolve problems
quickly and efficiently," states Angus Sherwood, IT Operations at the
University of Calgary. "The addition of discovery,
inventory/configuration and mapping for VMware environments in
WhatsConnected v1.5 will definitely increase our knowledge and give us
the ability to comprehensively document both our physical and virtualized
infrastructures."
