ONTARIO, Jun 16 (MARKET WIRE) --
Attention: Religion, Social and Aboriginal Issues Journalists
Hundreds of people from coast to coast to coast are heading to
Kitchener-Waterloo this week for a gathering on social justice issues
organized by KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiative and headlined
by Inuit activist and UN Noble Peace Prize nominee, Sheila Watt-Cloutier
and US theologian Ched Myers.
Six human rights activists from Asia, Africa and Latin America will bring
a global perspective to the event. For a list of the activists see:
Nearly 400 people have registered for the gathering that begins tomorrow
and includes plenary sessions with theological reflection, music and
worship, skill building and issue based workshops, networking
opportunities and more. Three sessions are open to members of the public.
Two pre-conference gatherings are for youth and young adults (18-30) and
anti-poverty activists. One post-conference gathering is being held for
migrant justice activists.
KAIROS is a national church-based nongovernmental social justice
organization with two main areas of work: ecological sustainability and
human rights.
WHO: KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives
WHAT: A three-day gathering of people interested in action for social
justice, particularly from a faith perspective. This gathering will
bring together people from the broad KAIROS community (church and
church-related agencies, ecumenical, Indigenous and Southern
partners, board and related program committees, grassroots network)
as well as people who have not been involved with KAIROS previously.
For full details on the gathering including speakers and open
sessions please see the KAIROS website:
http://www.kairoscanada.org/en/get-involved/gathering/
WHERE: University of Waterloo
WHEN: June 17-24
WHY: The theme of the gathering is: It's The End of the World as
We Know It. Why? We are living in a time of immense change.
We are experiencing simultaneous food, fuel, and financial crises,
with the greatest impact being felt by the most vulnerable on the
planet. It's time to acknowledge that the way in which we are
presently living is unsustainable. Change needs to happen.
The world as we know it must end - so that something new can come to
life. As a faith community, we embrace this concept of apocalyptic
hope and radical possibility. Together, with God's help, we can
create something new and envision how to live on this earth in a
more sustainable and equitable way.
