Residential Community in Rwanda for Orphans Offers Hope for the Future
NEW YORK & LONDON--(Business Wire)--
Liquidnet, the global institutional marketplace, today announced the official
opening of Agahozo Shalom Youth Village (ASYV), a special project of the
non-sectarian program of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. ASYV
is a residential community in Rwanda that will provide a home for 500 orphaned
and traumatized children still coping with the after effects of the genocide
that once plagued their country. Today, Seth Merrin, founder and CEO of
Liquidnet, will participate in the official opening of the village and dedicate
its high school, The Liquidnet Family High School. The First Lady of Rwanda,
Jeannette Kagame, will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony.

The ASYV represents an investment in the future of Rwanda, and will prepare the
children to make meaningful contributions to their country, enabling them to
take on leadership roles in the years ahead. The youth village is built on over
140 acres of land and is modeled after similar projects that were established in
Israel in the wake of the Holocaust. The ASYV is believed to be the first
project to bring the concept of a youth village to Africa, and aims to be a
replicable and sustainable model for meeting the holistic needs of orphans and
other traumatized youth throughout the world. Children at the ASYV are provided
with food, shelter, education, counseling programs, a medical clinic,
recreational facilities and security. The first class of 125 children moved into
the ASYV in December 2008.

"We`re delighted and proud to officially commemorate the opening of the
Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village," said Seth Merrin, CEO of Liquidnet. "When we
chose to support this project, the goal was to build a village that would
provide a holistic nurturing environment that provides for family and security
along with housing, education, and medical services to children who have been
through the worst trauma imaginable. We are proud of what has been achieved - in
a miraculously short period of time."

Agahozo is the Kinyarwandan word for "a place where tears are dried" and Shalom
is Hebrew for "peace." The village integrates two central elements - the living
environment and the learning environment. The living environment tends to the
physical and psychological needs of the youth. There are 32 houses in total
where 16 children live together in each group home with a "house mother" to
recreate a family unit. The learning environment focuses on two complementary
areas - formal and informal education. The core principles of the informal
education curriculum are healing and enrichment. The formal education at the
ASYV ensures access to a structured education program - and thus a future - for
many who would not otherwise be able to receive it.

"We want to thank everyone for their support," continued Merrin. "The entire
Liquidnet family has played an important role in this undertaking, and has
donated their time and their money to support this project. We hope that we have
helped to build a model that will serve to inspire others to take up similar
causes and give back to society."

Liquidnet devotes one percent of its gross revenue each year towards giving back
through a program known as "Liquidnet For Good." This nearly unprecedented level
of commitment earned the company the prestigious Excellence Award from the
Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy for 2009. Agahozo-Shalom has been
the cornerstone of Liquidnet For Good, with the company contributing USD$6.0
million cash since 2007. In addition to financial resources, Liquidnet employees
and their family members have contributed untallied amounts of goods and
services towards the project through a volunteer group called the "Liquidnet
Family." Over 30 employees or their family members have visited Rwanda to
directly help with the project, and nearly 75% of the total global Liquidnet
workforce has contributed in some form.
