Firearms Industry and ATF Join Forces to Stop Illegal Purchases of Firearms in
Houston

"Buy a gun for someone who can't and buy yourself 10 years in jail."

What: News Conference to announce the "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" campaign
in Houston

Who: Dewey Webb, Special Agent in Charge, ATF, Houston Field Division
Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President & General Counsel, NSSF

Where: ATF Houston Field Division
Conference Room
15355 Vantage Parkway West, Suite 200
Houston, Texas 77032

When:Wednesday, June 24, 2009
10:00 a.m.

Why: To educate residents and visitors to Houston on the severe penalties
associated with illegal gun purchasing, or straw purchasing. Also, to educate
Federal Firearms Licensed retailers on how to better detect potential straw
purchasers. Straw purchasers are otherwise law-abiding citizens who undergo
and pass the criminal background check required by federal law before the
retail purchase of any firearm. However, these people are not the actual
buyers; instead, they use their good name to commit the crime of providing a
firearm to a person prohibited by law from possessing a gun. The program's key
message is: Buy a gun for someone who can't and buy yourself 10 years in jail.

Developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Don't Lie for the Other
Guy program educates firearms retailers on how to better prevent straw
purchases and warns the public about the penalties associated with
participating in an illegal purchase. See more at www.dontlie.org.
