Software backed by Absolute Theft Recovery Team brings data protection
and laptop recovery to consumers in Europe
VANCOUVER, June 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Absolute(R) Software Corporation
(TSX: ABT), the leading provider of firmware-based, patented, computer theft
recovery, data protection and secure IT asset management solutions, has
announced that its home and small business laptop theft recovery and data
protection solution, Computrace(R) LoJack(R) for Laptops, is now available for
purchase in Europe.
Computrace LoJack for Laptops by Absolute Software, aimed at general laptop
users, students and small businesses, is a theft recovery and data protection
service that uses software to track, locate and recover stolen laptop and
desktop computers. It is backed by the Absolute Theft Recovery Team, which
uses the technology and investigative techniques to trace a stolen computer
and gather evidence, and then works with local authorities to recover the
computer. In addition, data can be deleted remotely from a stolen computer to
help protect the customer's private information.
This is the first European consumer offering from the company that created
computer theft recovery and has been helping European companies combat laptop
theft and protect sensitive data with its mobile device and asset tracking
technology. The launch follows the success of the Computrace LoJack for
Laptops product in North America, where over one million subscribers have the
software to protect their personal computers and the information on them.
"Computer security is not just a business issue - it's something every
individual with any type of computer needs to consider," said John Livingston,
Chairman and CEO at Absolute Software. "Consumers and small businesses in
Europe can now get the same theft protection and data delete service that
European companies have been using for years."
"Research by the Ponemon Institute shows that 900 laptops go missing just from
Heathrow Airport each week. With that in mind, the need for a theft recovery
service designed specifically for consumers is an urgent requirement for
Europeans. Computrace LoJack for Laptops has proven to protect against theft,
as well as enabling remote data deletion and the recovery of the computer if
it is stolen," added Livingston. "In short, the service gives people a
safeguard against theft and a contingency plan should the worst happen."
How Computrace LoJack for Laptops by Absolute Software Works
Computrace LoJack for Laptops is powered by patented Computrace technology
from Absolute. It is embedded in the firmware of computers from the world's
leading computer manufacturers* right at the factory or it can be installed by
the customer. When embedded in the firmware, Computrace can survive operating
system re-installations, as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and
re-imaging. The technology is virtually undetectable and calls home to the
Absolute Monitoring Center with location information. The Computrace Agent can
be activated by customers when they purchase a subscription for Computrace
LoJack for Laptops ranging from 1-3 years.
All Absolute theft recovery solutions are backed by the efforts of the
Absolute Theft Recovery Team. When a computer equipped with Computrace LoJack
for Laptops is reported stolen, the Computrace Agent sends a silent signal
over the Internet to the Absolute Monitoring Center, allowing the Absolute
Theft Recovery Team to forensically mine the computer using a variety of
procedures including key captures, registry scanning, file scanning,
geolocation, and other investigative techniques to determine who has the
computer and how it is being used. Absolute then works with local law
enforcement to recover the computer. Staffed by former law enforcement
officers, the team finds stolen computers through their relationships with
police departments around the world. With over 650 years of combined law
enforcement experience, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team recovers an average
of 85 stolen computers per week.
