Company`s Support Creates Forum for Policymakers at NALEO Conference to Increase Knowledge on How to Address Health Disparities Among Latinos LOS ANGELES--(Business Wire)-- The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund announced that it is partnering with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. to hold the NALEO Policy Institute on Health Communities at its annual convening. The initiative will provide more than 40 policymakers from throughout the country with the information necessary to address health disparities facing Latinos. The institute will take place during the organization's 26th Annual Conference, to be held in Los Angeles June 25-27, 2009. One of the most important issues facing our communities today is the staggering increase in rates of obesity and chronic disease. Wal-Mart`s investment in this initiative will make possible intensive training and professional development for Latino policymakers and help enhance their capacity to become effective advocates for their communities. As part of the curriculum, participants will develop strategic partnerships and learn about best practices, model initiatives and receive governance skills training to improve their effectiveness as public servants. "At Wal-Mart, we recognize that the public and private sectors must work together to address the nation`s health concerns," said Dr. John Agwunobi, senior vice president and president of Wal-Mart`s Health and Wellness division. "As we continue to provide our customers with access to quality, affordable health and wellness products and solutions, Wal-Mart is proud to partner with the NALEO Educational Fund to create a forum that will equip policymakers with the knowledge needed to address some of our nation`s most critical health issues." The NALEO Annual Conference is the largest gathering of Latino elected and appointed officials and their supporters. Conference participants from throughout the country will assemble for three days of professional development, public policy discussions, and exploration of key concerns that most affect the Latino community. "Latinos face high rates of obesity and chronic disease that threaten our children and families," said Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of the NALEO Educational Fund. "Wal-Mart`s critical support of leadership development for Latino elected and appointed officials on this topic is an effective way to build a stronger and healthier nation."
