NEW YORK, NY, Jun 24 (MARKET WIRE) --
For the first time ever, ORLive is presenting a surgery double-feature,
with two back-to-back live webcasts demonstrating treatment approaches
for aortic aneurysms. Beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24,
viewers can observe the procedures, which took place at
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and interact live with the doctors by
submitting email questions during the broadcast.
The first webcast will focus on treatment of the thoracic aorta and
feature an open repair of an aortic aneurysm performed by Dr. Leonard
Girardi, O. Wayne Isom Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Director
of Aortic Surgery Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell
Medical Center. He will be joined on the panel by Dr. Allan Stewart,
Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Director of Aortic
Surgery Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University
Medical Center; and by Dr. James McKinsey, Associate Professor of
Surgery, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and
Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College; and
Interim Chief of Vascular Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell
and NewYork-Presbyterian /Columbia.
"Because the aorta is the body's main supplier of blood, a ruptured aortic
aneurysm can cause life-threatening bleeding. Although the patient may not
have any symptoms, intervention is usually required," says Dr. Girardi.
"While there are now a variety of treatment options, including
endovascular stenting, the gold standard for many patients remains open
surgery. In each case, the surgeon and cardiologist discuss the best
treatment approach based on a variety of factors, including the size of
the aneurysm. This Web cast will showcase a thoracoabdominal surgery, in
which we cool the patient to 90 degree Fahrenheit, cross-clamp the lower
portion of their aorta and sew in a Dacron graft."
The second webcast will deal primarily with treatment of the abdominal
aorta and will feature a procedure using a fenestrated endograft
performed by Dr. McKinsey. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Harry
Bush, Jr., Associate Professor of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College,
and Attending Vascular Surgeon, NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, with
participation by Dr. McKinsey and Dr. William A. Gray, Associate
Professor of Clinical Medicine Columbia University College of Physicians
and Surgeons and Director, Endovascular Services Center for
Interventional Vascular Therapy NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia.
"Approximately 10 percent of abdominal aortic aneurysm patients have an
affected area close to branching arteries for the kidneys, small bowel and
liver," says Dr. McKinsey. "We are one of only three hospitals in the
United States to offer a fenestrated endograft for these patients. The
innovative device has custom-positioned holes (fenestrations) that allows
for proper blood flow through the aorta to the kidneys and other organs."
