GEICO grants scholarships to give children unique outdoors experiences NORTH BROOKFIELD, Mass.--(Business Wire)-- Summer fun and youth development for inner-city children is the heart of and soul of Urban League`s Camp Atwater, which GEICO will be a part of when it kicks off its 88th camping season this summer in North Brookfield, Mass. Each summer, Camp Atwater brings together children aged eight to fifteen years old from all over the Northeast to provide them with a sleep-away camp adventure that combines recreational fun with academic activities. The experiences at Camp Atwater not only help build character, but also expand their educational horizons. "This summer season is particularly important because of the high-risk challenges in the inner city and the economic downturn making important experiences like camping less accessible," said Henry M. Thomas, Urban League Camp Atwater president and CEO. "The Nellie Mae Foundation released a study last year which found that summer camp enrichment programs significantly reduce learning lost in youth during the summer vacation period." This summer, GEICO is joining in the Camp Atwater fun through new camper scholarships that will provide four children with the two-week camp experience. "The Urban League and GEICO have proudly worked together for decades," said GEICO Vice President Rynthia Rost. "Community involvement is a top priority for GEICO, and we are extremely pleased to work with the Urban League yet again to help give children the summer camp experience they deserve." "GEICO`s donation to the Urban League's camperships program provides tremendous value to families who are in need of assistance," said Thomas. "Many youth from low income families have a challenge finding funding and are unable to benefit from summer youth enrichment programs. GEICO`s gift significantly lessons the challenge."
