HARRISBURG, Pa., June 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At the direction of
Governor Edward G. Rendell, State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski said
today that his agency will provide assistance to the Harrisburg Police
Department as the city works to protect its residents following a recent
increase in gun violence.
Working with Harrisburg Police Chief Charles Kellar, Pawlowski said the state
police and city have devised a plan for increasing the presence of law
enforcement personnel on the street, providing an additional measure to deter
others from committing crimes.
"Supervisors at Troop H, Harrisburg, are working with Chief Kellar and his
department now to coordinate state police patrols in the city on an as-needed
basis," Pawlowski said. "Our people will work closely with the dedicated men
and women of the city's police department and will assist them in their
ongoing efforts to remove criminal element from the streets by providing a
heightened, unified police presence."
Pawlowski said that for officer safety reasons, state police will not provide
specific information about the number of troopers assigned or their scheduled
shifts.
Governor Rendell directed state police to offer assistance to the city when he
attended a community meeting on Thursday, June 25, in Harrisburg. The meeting
was prompted by at least a dozen shootings that have occurred in the city
since June 7.
