Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS Router Wins Utilities Telecom Council Best Telecom Equipment Award PARIS, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In an endorsement of its industry-leading IP/MPLS and pseudowire capabilities, Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is proud to announce the Utilities Telecom Council (UTC) has declared the 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR) as the winner of its "Best Telecom Equipment" award. The UTC product awards highlight the very best in critical infrastructure industry technology. The 7705 SAR was chosen in part for its ability to adapt legacy and advanced services onto a modern Ethernet and IP/MPLS infrastructure. Leveraging the powerful Service Router Operating System (SR OS) and 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM), the 7705 SAR is available in compact, low power consumption platforms delivering highly available services over resilient and flexible network topologies. The significance of this market is captured in a recent study by the UTC showing that utility telecom spending is increasing in 2009. Utilities plan to spend around $2.6 billion on telecommunications equipment and services in 2009, a level of spending that represents a 13% increase over 2008 utility telecom-related expenditures, according to preliminary results from UTC's Utilities Telecommunications Forecast Study. Based on the survey results, spending on 'smart grid' technologies should reach $569 million in 2009, a baseline level of spending that could dramatically escalate over the coming two years given the influx of billions of dollars in smart grid stimulus funding. "Winning this award is a strong endorsement of the 7705 SAR and the Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS solution capabilities in this exciting and demanding market," said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel-Lucent's IP activities. "Many utilities are transforming, converging and modernizing their networks through investment in newer technologies for scalable, efficient and reliable control and monitoring of their systems."
