The Annenberg Space for Photography Comes Alive With Free Guest Lectures by
Top Photojournalists
LOS ANGELES, June 29 /PRNewswire/ --
WHAT: The new Annenberg Space for Photography presents workshops and
free lectures by award-winning photojournalists expanding upon the
artistry and themes in the "Pictures of the Year, International"
(POYi) exhibit. The POYi exhibit showcases the winning images
from one of the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism
competitions in the world.

WHO: Renowned photographers and photojournalists from around the world
present their work and the challenges and triumphs from their
process, and lead hands on workshops open to both professionals
and novices.

Saturday, July 25, 6:30-8pm Lecture: Steve McCurry
Steve McCurry, one of today's finest image-makers, has covered numerous
international and civil conflicts, including 30 years of coverage of
Afghanistan. Many of his images have become modern icons- such as the
photograph of the Afghan refugee girl with strikingly vibrant eyes that
appeared on the cover of National Geographic, described by many as the most
recognizable photograph in the world today. His photography and editing work
has received multiple honors from POYi over the years.
Thursday, July 30, 6:30-8pm Lecture: Carolyn Cole
Carolyn Cole: For nearly two decades, Carolyn Cole has covered war,
starvation, and brutality in the Middle East, Haiti, Kosovo, and Afghanistan
for the Los Angeles Times. Cole received the Pulitzer Prize for Feature
Photography in 2004 for her coverage of the siege of Monrovia, the capita of
Liberia, and an "Award of Excellence" from POYi in 2006. She was a
contributing artist to L8S ANG3LES, the inaugural exhibit at the Annenberg
Space for Photography.
Thursday, August 6, 6:30-8pm Lecture: David Burnett
David Burnett is a photojournalist with more than four decades of experience
covering the news and tempo of our age. In a recent issue of American Photo
magazine Burnett was named one of the "100 Most Important People in
Photography." This year POYi is honoring Burnett with an "Award of
Excellence" for images captured during the US presidential election, which are
also featured in the print exhibit at the Annenberg Space for Photography.
Thursday, August 13, 6:30-8pm Lecture: "Dan Winters:
Periodical
Photographs"
Dan Winters: World renowned photographer Dan Winters has shot regular
assignments for magazines such as Esquire, Vanity Fair, The New York Times
Magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, TIME, and many others.
POYi honored Winters this year for his achievement in portraiture. During his
lecture, Winters will talk about his early influences and his path to becoming
an editorial photographer. He will also discuss the process and journey of
creating his first book, Dan Winters: Periodical Photographs, which was just
released by Aperture.
Thursday, August 20, 6:30-8pm Lecture: Michael Robinson
Chavez
Michael Robinson Chavez: Through his work for the Los Angeles Times, Michael
Robinson Chavez has covered wide-ranging assignments in over 45 countries
including: the Congolese Civil War, elections in Nepal, life in India's slums,
and the US led invasion and occupation of Iraq. He has twice been named
Photographer of the Year by The White House News Photographers' Association
and received an Award of Excellence as Newspaper Photographer of the Year in
2008 by Pictures of the Year International. He is also the POYi recipient of
the 2009 Award of Excellence for Feature Picture Story.
Thursday, September 3, 6:30-8pm Lecture: David Hume
Kennerly
David Hume Kennerly: Pulitzer Prize and POYi winner David Hume Kennerly has
been documenting history for four decades. Kennerly has photographed more
than 35 covers for TIME and Newsweek, covered assignments in more than 130
countries, and counts more than one million images in his photographic
archive. This renowned White house photographer, whose iconic images include
Nixon waving goodbye on the white house lawn, has helped define American
photojournalism.
Thursday, September 17, 6:30-8pm Slide Show Night: multiple artists

An intimate, catered, invitation only gathering of photography professionals
and their friends and family; assembled to celebrate the work of
photojournalists- those from the POYi exhibit and from the extended
photojournalism community.

Saturday, September 26, 9:00am-4:00pm Workshop: Colin Finlay
Colin Finlay photographs have been featured in Vanity Fair, TIME, U.S. News
and World Report, American Photo, Los Angeles Magazine, and more. In pursuit
of his passion, Finlay has circled the globe 27 times, in search of that one
photograph that will be a testament to the depth of human will and compassion,
and of hope. Finlay received the "Best Photographic Book Award" from POYi for
his book Testify in 2007, as well as special recognition in 2008 for his
contribution to the book Darfur: 20 Years of War and Genocide in Sudan.
Thursday, October 1, 6:30-8pm Lecture: "Russia - From
Broken Empire to
Wild Wild East"
Gerd Ludwig has been a contract photographer for National Geographic Magazine
since the early 1990's. He is known for his coverage of the dissolution of
the Soviet Bloc and post-Soviet Russia, and is considered the world's foremost
color photographer documenting the region. In 2002 Ludwig won POYi's Award of
Excellence, in the category for the Best Photography Book for his Broken
Empire: After the Fall of the USSR.
Thursday, October 8, 6:30-8pm Lecture: Eli Reed
Eli Reed is a professor of photojournalism at the University of Texas and a
former Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. He has worked on assignment
covering world news events since 1982 for publications such as National
Geographic, TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue,
Sports Illustrated, and Vanity Fair. Reed won the POYi World Understanding
Award in 1983, and has also served as a judge for previous POYi competitions.
Thursday, October 15, 6:30-8pm Lecture: "Everything is
Personal. Tales
of Intimate
Engagements"
Gillian Laub has worked in the Middle East, producing portraits of the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Ramallah and other locations in the
region. Her first book, Testimony (Aperture, June 2007), contains 50 of her
portraits and marks the 40th anniversary of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War.
Thursday, October 29, 6:30-8pm Lecture: "War is Only
Half the Story:
A Conversation
with Sara Terry
and Louie Palu"
Sara Terry will discuss her long-term project about the aftermath of war in
Bosnia -- Aftermath: Bosnia's Long Road to Peace-- which was published in
September 2005 by Channel Photographics. Her photographs are in the permanent
collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and in many private
collections.
Louie Palu has worked as a photojournalist for 20 years, focusing on the human
condition. His work has been published worldwide in publications such as The
New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Globe and
Mail, Sunday Times Magazine. Most recently he has been covering the war in
Afghanistan and has made several trips to the Guantanamo Bay detention
facility for a long-term project on the prison.
